Pergolas & Patio Covers:
Permanently Providing Shade
by Dan Mohan with Jake Parker
Now that we are into the “dog days” of summer, the number of people requesting retractable awnings from J & J has once again skyrocketed. Every year, as more people hear about the advantages a lateral arm awning provides, these products gain greater popularity. But retractable awnings aren't the only option for providing shade and a more useable outdoor living space. Pergolas and patio roofs, both of which offer great value and some unique features, have also seen a resurgence in popularity.
If it's shade you seek, consider a pergola. With tall rafters and the option of lattice above, pergolas can provide significant shading over a deck or patio space. Pergolas can be free standing or mount to the house, and come in both natural wood and maintenance-free aluminum. You could add an outdoor ceiling fan, drop curtains, and some hanging baskets around the perimeter to create a backyard oasis that is as beautiful as it is useful. With many sizes and designs available, pergolas can compliment houses of almost every size and style.
If you are looking to create an outdoor living space that can be enjoyed rain or shine, consider an insulated patio roof. Insulated roofs offer many of the same design features of a pergola while adding the versatility to enjoy the outdoors in almost any weather condition. What's more, insulated covers offer the ability to screen in the walls underneath for a bug-free enclosure or even turn the space into a three- or four-season room. With an attractive finish and the durability to stay that way year after year, insulated patio roofs offer tremendous value.
Many people who are considering a retractable awning are surprised to find that the price of a pergola or patio roof is well within their budget. With long lasting appeal and the ability to be installed in a much greater number of configurations, pergolas and patio roofs are worth keeping in mind when you're thinking of making your deck or patio into a more comfortable and beautiful living space.
